Project Description:
Using oil pastel, draw a portrait of yourself or an acquaintance using the methods of contemporary artist Chuck Close. For this, you will be using a forward-facing photograph that you take specifically for the assignment.
Medium:
Oil pastel, acrylic paint OR a color medium of your choice
Size:
Sketchbook size or larger (preferably larger)
Objectives:
- Draw with photorealistic accuracy - perfect proportion and likeness
- Use optical blending by juxtaposing colors for the viewer's eye/mind to blend
- Create the illusion of neutral colors through optical blending of intense, saturated colors
- Change the color temperatures for highlights (warm?) and shadows (cool?)
Instructions:
Challenge: Draw much larger than life-size.
- Draw from a photograph that you arrange - Use a frontal, head-on, passport-photo view.
- Draw using a grid of small squares, rectangles, or diamonds. The grid will remain evident as a pattern of shapes/marks of color.
- Use a combination of colors within each square of the grid.
- Be aware of the visual impact that the color relationships hold, and of the overall value and temperature of the square..
- Use few, if any, neutral colors. Juxtapose (place next to each other) colors that the viewer's eyes will blend to create the illusion of neutral colors.
- Use warm colors for highlights and cool colors for shadows.
Grading Criteria:
- Photorealistic accuracy (proportion, likeness, value)
- Impact of color relationships (optical blending to approximate overall hue, value, chroma, and temperature of each area)
- Craftsmanship
To Start:
- Take a photograph of yourself or acquaintance.
- Grid the photograph
- Grid a piece of drawing paper or canvas with the same proportion as the photo
