Portfolio Homework: "Map"

Due for critique: June 6

How to Get from There to Here

Problem:
By definition, a map is a flat-surfaced pictorial representation of the earth or the heavens (Of course, as an artist you can play with, modify, or adapt that definition.). Using the idea of a map as a point of departure, chart your daily route from where you live to Burlington High School. Consider incorporating elements associated with maps, such as a legend, a compass, or visual topography.

Media:
There are NO LIMITATIONS on the use of color or media, but you are expected to create a fully resolved, high-quality showpiece.

Consider This:
The medium of a map, which can be understood as a graphic guide, is fertile ground for discovering and developing personal problem-solving strategies. By focusing on the charting and plotting of comings and goings and exploring all aspects of what a map can represent, personal travel experience can produce innovative design solutions that extend well beyond the traditional map concept.

--- Text and problem from the book Visual Literacy: A Conceptual Approach to Graphic Problem Solving, by Judith Wilde and Richard Wilde

Tips and Thoughts
  • Think like an artist:
    • Think outside the box;
    • Bend the rules;
    • Approach the problem from a unique perspective.
  • Consider your options; what materials are available to you?
  • You are not limited to two dimensions. What possible form(s) can this take?
  • What role does time play in your journey?

Name Design -- Assignment Description

Exhibition Preparation
Completed (all work up and arranged) by Tuesday, May 21

Directions for Exhibition Set Up
During first third week of May, you will be hanging your work in your assigned space in the Lower Library, on the wheeled, carpeted panels and display easels. If you have specific needs regarding space (tables, corner of room, etc.) or the type of panels (lightweight carpet-covered or heavy board), please let me know.

You must:
  • Include your artist statement.
  • Include your name design (approx. 8 x 16")
  • Include your entire concentration
  • Include your best work from the past two years
  • Bring refreshments. We will consult with one another about what you'll be bringing.
  • Invite friends and family members.
  • Be at the daytime and evening receptions.
    • Daytime: Wednesday, May 22, Period 7 (for students and faculty)
    • Evening: Wednesday, May 22, 6 - 7:30 pm (for family and community)

Preparation and Layout
You can begin preparing your work as soon as you'd like. Work should be prepped (matted, mounted on black or white paper, or otherwise looking good). The pieces should be spaced equally and aligned well. For the wheeled panels, consider the panel as you would if you were designing a page in graphic design. Lay it out in advance on the floor, then transfer the work onto the panel. For the walls in the gallery, center the work approximately 58" from the ground.
